Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s statement regarding the safety of Russian airspace. Zelensky warned that the airspace is increasingly unsafe due to ongoing drone strikes. He referred to this action as ‘state terrorism.’

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, most airlines have circumvented Russian airspace. However, some nations, including China, India, and the United Arab Emirates, continue flights. Zelensky, according to the BBC, asserted, ‘Ukraine does not target civilian aviation.’ However, he emphasized the growing presence of drones over Russia.

Putin called these comments equating to ‘state terrorism,’ reinforcing Russia’s commitment to ongoing attacks against Ukraine. ‘We are asked to resume negotiations and hold direct meetings,’ Putin commented at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Kyrgyzstan, as reported by The Associated Press. ‘We do not engage with terrorists.’

This exchange arises years after the tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Ukraine in 2014, resulting in 298 deaths. Investigations have held Russia accountable, despite Moscow’s repeated denials. The International Civil Aviation Organization last year found Russia responsible for the incident. A Dutch-led investigation concluded a Buk missile system from Russia, used by pro-Moscow separatists, brought the plane down.

Germany Accuses Russia in Airport Drone Incident

Germany has accused Russia of orchestrating a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month. The drone, believed to be targeting a Ukrainian plane, was found with explosives. German authorities have responded by shutting down one of Russia’s consulates and suggesting further actions.

Russia dismissed the claims, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova labeling them ‘contrived.’ Putin echoed sentiments that Germany’s government seeks an alleged distraction from domestic issues.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s recent covert Moscow visit highlights strained U.S.-Russia relations. Reports suggest the trip aimed to caution Russia against NATO confrontations and to reevaluate its backing of Iran, as noted by Politico sources familiar with the discussions.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Ratcliffe met Russian intelligence but not directly with Putin. President Donald Trump later disclosed on a radio show his intention for Ratcliffe to facilitate ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict. ‘We are working arduously to conclude this war,’ Trump stated.
