The Dominican Republic is set to be the 48th country globally, and seventh in Latin America, to embrace the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. President Luis Abinader directed the foreign ministry to formalize this decision.

Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun praised the Dominican Republic’s decision, urging others to follow suit. He referenced efforts in the U.S. under previous administrations as examples for addressing antisemitism within state institutions.
The IHRA’s definition, which includes contemporary examples, aids various bodies in identifying antisemitic behavior. As of 2025, 1,334 organizations globally had endorsed the IHRA framework.
Abinader highlighted that rejecting antisemitism is not a stance on specific governments or conflicts, but a denouncement of hatred and discrimination under any circumstances.
The Dominican Republic’s decision is also tied to its historical refugee support during the Nazi era. A new building for the Jewish Museum of Sosúa, commemorating this history, will receive 50 million Dominican pesos.
Ultimately, Abinader encouraged regional action against indifference and for translating memory into education and principles into action.
