New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Advocates for Nationwide Democratic Socialism

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed confidence that democratic socialism can succeed nationwide, following his endorsement of successful candidates in New York Democratic primaries. In an interview with Jonathan Karl on ABC News, Mamdani argued that democratic socialists have the potential to be elected across the United States for any position.

Mayor Mamdani, known for his democratic socialist stance, claimed this on ‘This Week’ after Karl inquired about the possibility of a democratic socialist being elected president. This discussion followed the wins of Mamdani-backed candidates Brad Lander, Claire Valez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York’s Democratic congressional primaries, defeating incumbent Democrats.

“I think we are seeing a hunger that is not just felt by New Yorkers, but, frankly, by Americans from coast to coast for a new kind of politics, one that puts working people at the heart of it,” Mamdani said.

Mamdani spoke on ABC News defending democratic socialism after his endorsed candidates succeeded in New York primaries. He refuted warnings from moderate Democrats suggesting that such wins might negatively impact the party’s national image. Mamdani emphasized the need for Democrats to present a message beyond opposition to former President Donald Trump.

Mamdani argued that the primary results in New York signal a broader message for the Democratic Party, ahead of both the midterms and the 2028 presidential election. He articulated that these candidates offer a vision that not only applies to immediate political concerns but extends further into the future.

Karl questioned Mamdani about Chevalier, who faced criticism for past statements advocating for the abolition of prisons, borders, and police, with her campaign site listing “Abolish ICE” among priorities. Mamdani maintained his belief that the Democratic Party could perform well nationally by focusing on working people, despite differing policy views.

“There are prisons,” Mamdani stated. “And what we’re also showing in this city is that safety is not something that’s up for debate.”

Mamdani defended Chevalier, one of his endorsed candidates, against critiques and highlighted the need for Democratic messaging beyond anti-Trump sentiments.

Mamdani characterized democratic socialism as pragmatic governance, citing actions his administration took regarding child care, tenant rights, infrastructure, and crime prevention as examples.

Statistics from the NYPD indicated that New York City had documented its lowest number of murders, shooting incidents, and shooting victims during the first five months of any year. Mamdani referred to these statistics while defending his administration’s achievements.

A group of moderate Democrats promoted a “Promise to America” pledge, asserting their capitalist beliefs and supporting secure borders, safe communities, fiscal discipline, and persuasion over ideological purity. Mamdani dismissed this anti-socialist push.

“I’m not interested in writing a manifesto or, frankly, in reading one,” Mamdani said. “I’m interested in delivering.”

Karl questioned Mamdani on his views regarding Israel, particularly if he supports Israel as a Jewish state. Mamdani stated his support for Israel as “a state with equal rights,” but declined to endorse a framing favoring one religion over another.

Mamdani remarked, “I think any state that privileges one religion over the other is one that I can’t tell you I support, whether it be Israel or Saudi Arabia or anywhere else.”
