Rain Set to Influence Dutch Grand Prix as Lando Norris Targets Victory

The Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, Netherlands, began under wet conditions, setting the stage for an unpredictable race as Lando Norris started from pole position. This may mark the first major wet race under new regulations planned for 2026, adding complexity to a circuit known for challenging overtaking conditions. Drivers equipped their cars with either intermediate or full wet-weather tires, adapting to the changing weather.

Rain made a brief appearance at the end of Saturday’s sprint, but it arrived too late to alter the race outcome significantly. McLaren’s Norris claimed the top qualifier spot after showing unexpected speed during the session, edging out competitors George Russell from Mercedes and championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

Norris’s performance in qualifying mirrored his previous successes, notably in Hungary, where he won the last Grand Prix on July 26. However, he acknowledged the challenges ahead at the coastal Dutch track, which presents unique hurdles compared to previous races.

In the Saturday sprint race, Norris started second but finished third as Charles Leclerc took the position from him. Norris expressed post-qualifying concerns about the race, noting continued difficulties in low-speed corners as a significant barrier. He remarked, “In low-speed corners we just really still struggle too much to be confident about everything. We definitely made a little bit of progress, but it’s still going to be on the trickier side of things tomorrow.” He further explained that qualifying conditions with new tires and low fuel tempered noticeable issues.

Meanwhile, George Russell captured victory in the sprint race, yet Antonelli’s fourth-place finish extended his overall standings lead to 53 points, as his closest rival, Lewis Hamilton, came seventh in the sprint. Hamilton experienced further setbacks, only securing fifth place in Grand Prix qualifying.

The current standings reveal Antonelli leading Russell by 56 points, while the gaps extend to 79 points over Leclerc and 90 over Norris.
