Ohtani’s Progress and Dodgers Updates

4 weeks ago 0

Shohei Ohtani, a star for the Dodgers, resumed pitching activities on Saturday as part of his comeback to dual roles on the field. Ohtani, who has not pitched since July 3, participated in a live batting practice session, throwing 30 pitches to fellow Dodger and rehabbing catcher Will Smith. Previously, Ohtani had been limited to bullpen practices.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts shared his positive outlook on Ohtani’s progress, saying, “We’re getting there. So, today was a good day.” Ohtani appeared to be approaching his usual form during the session, which even included light-hearted exchanges with Smith.

Roberts indicated that Ohtani might have another live batting practice before possibly returning to the game rotation. “I think if it were up to Shohei, he’d be in a game in a few days,” said Roberts. However, plans will be made in coordination with Ohtani and the training staff.

Ohtani’s knee problem, which initially took him off the mound, is reportedly no longer an issue. Roberts explained that adjustments to Ohtani’s pitching mechanics have alleviated knee pressure, adding value to live practices which test these changes against hitters.

“That’s why this [is] live and the lives are good,” Roberts explained, emphasizing the importance of addressing mechanical concerns during these sessions.

Meanwhile, Dodgers’ center fielder Andy Pages is likely to undergo surgery for a fractured left hand, an injury from a 100-mph pitch by Pittsburgh’s Bubba Chandler. His recovery period remains at approximately four weeks, regardless of surgery.

Roberts reassured, “The season is not over for him, and we expect him back [at] full health.”

In other team news, Tyler Glasnow is set to pitch without restrictions against the Atlanta Braves. Justin Wrobleski will return as a relief pitcher after recovering from forearm inflammation, while Edwin Díaz will be deployed in less-stressful scenarios following a neck issue.

The Dodgers continue to rely on strong performances from players like Will Smith, who is progressing well through regular play alongside Ohtani. Roberts remarked on the beneficial competition between Smith and Ohtani during practice sessions.
