The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) took action by confiscating electronic devices belonging to former congressman Eric Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport on a recent Saturday night. Two sources familiar with the situation confirmed this to Fox News Digital. Following this, Swalwell’s Washington, D.C. residence was searched on Sunday, as disclosed by another source.
The confiscated items included at least one cell phone. The sources indicated that the seizure is linked to an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations. Although the devices were taken, Swalwell was neither arrested nor detained. Fox News Digital sought comments from Swalwell’s attorney.
DOJ OPENS INVESTIGATION INTO ERIC SWALWELL OVER SEXUAL ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS
Eric Swalwell, a former Democratic congressman from California, resigned in April amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. Prior to his resignation, he faced potential expulsion from Congress where he served for 13 years. At least five women, including a former staff member, have accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct or rape. These allegations also prompted him to withdraw his candidacy for California governor.
In April 2026, Lonna Drewes publicly reacted during a news conference in Beverly Hills, California, detailing allegations against Swalwell after his exit from the governor’s race. The AP normally refrains from identifying alleged victims, but Drewes chose to come forward publicly.
Amid his resignation, Swalwell expressed his intention to combat the allegations, stating, “I will fight the serious false allegations made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.”
Further attention was drawn to Swalwell earlier this week when the White House released declassified documents regarding an FBI investigation into his relationship with Christine “Fang Fang” Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative. Swalwell acknowledged having “physical relations” with Fang on a few occasions, as per the declassified FBI documents shared by the White House. Their last encounter reportedly took place in March 2015.
This information was unveiled by the White House’s new Government Transparency Task Force. Swalwell had been interviewed by the FBI in May 2015 and again in March 2016 concerning his ties with Fang. Fang allegedly had connections to China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS), and her parents were recognized as Chinese intelligence officers.
In a separate event, Eric Swalwell sued a senior housing official in November, accusing the official of using Democrats’ private mortgage records to instigate federal criminal investigations.
