Heavy rain and strong winds struck the Northeast U.S. on Thursday, resulting in substantial disruption. Storms impacted a beach on Long Island, flooded a significant New York freeway, and cut power in parts of Delaware’s capital.
Social media posts displayed debris airborne and heavy rain as a potential tornado touched down at Atlantic Beach on Long Island’s outer barrier. It demolished a major beach club, scattering broken beach chairs and wood beams along the shore.
The Inwood Fire Department reported extensive damage to cabanas at the Sun and Surf Beach Club in Atlantic Beach. Inwood Fire Chief Josiyah Green confirmed no one was trapped or needed rescue at the club.
“Best I can call it is luck,” Green stated. “Just by the grace of luck that a lot of people weren’t hurt here because this beach club is a very popular place during the summer.”
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency. “There are reports of people trapped in their vehicles due to flooding in the south shore, and first responders are assisting in their rescue,” Blakeman said. The National Weather Service had noted the possibility of waterspouts, but could not confirm a tornado on the beach initially.
According to meteorologist Bryan Ramsey in New York, the storm was moving east offshore and expected to diminish over several hours. The Long Island Expressway experienced flooding during the heavy rain, prompting closures in both directions. Photos online showed stopped cars and emergency crews managing the water.
In Dover, Delaware, a confirmed tornado caused substantial damage. No injuries were reported, though buildings like the Days Inn and Super Lodge suffered significant destruction, with collapsed roofs and damaged walls.
Dover Police Lt. Mark Hoffman remarked the damages aligned with tornado activity.
“It would certainly appear that way based on the path of travel and the amount of damage that we’ve had,” Hoffman said.
Images and videos online depicted fallen trees, downed power lines, and flooded roads. A visitor from Greensboro, North Carolina, Kuimonie Goins, shared her experience at the Days Inn when the storm hit, describing a scene of flying debris and the formation of a tornado.
Delaware Electric Cooperative reported over 1,000 people without power in the northern service area. The weather service issued flash flood warnings in eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
