Strength Training in Pregnancy May Lower Gestational Diabetes Risk

Recent research conducted in Spain indicates that strength training during pregnancy might help reduce the risk of developing gestational diabetes, particularly in expectant mothers who are overweight or obese. The study, led by Dr. Teresa E. Santa Cruz, analyzed 209 pregnant women with a body mass index (BMI) over 25.

The goal was to assess whether a structured strength-training program could prevent gestational diabetes mellitus. This condition affects blood sugar levels during pregnancy, increasing the risk of complications for both mother and child.

Study Design and Results

Participants were randomly divided into two groups: one following a strength-training program and one receiving standard prenatal care. The exercise group began training between 12 and 14 weeks gestation, continuing until around 36 weeks. Their regimen included a supervised session plus additional home workouts weekly.

Results published in the journal Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica reveal a potential positive effect of strength training. Dr. Robert Thompson, a certified physician executive, remarked to Newsweek that this study offers promise in terms of metabolic benefits during pregnancy.

Among those in the exercise group, only 2% developed gestational diabetes, compared to over 7% in the standard care group. Notably, none of the women adhering to at least two exercise sessions weekly developed the condition.

Additional Benefits

The study also noted a lower occurrence of hydramnios, excess amniotic fluid linked with pregnancy complications. No cases appeared in the exercise group, while four were recorded in the control group.

Most striking were improvements in daily wellbeing. Participants involved in strength training reported statistically higher quality-of-life scores by the end of their pregnancies. These included fewer symptoms of fatigue, anxiety, low mood, digestive discomfort, and pain.

Health Implications

Dr. Thompson emphasized that strength training should focus on maintaining muscular strength and endurance safely. It’s feasible even at moderate intensity using body weight, free weights, or resistance bands. Monitoring signs of overexertion, such as fatigue or pain, is advised.

Gestational diabetes, affecting 5-9% of pregnancies annually in the U.S. according to the CDC, poses risks like preeclampsia and future type 2 diabetes.

Safety and Future Research

This exercise program demonstrated safety with no increase in adverse outcomes among the exercising participants. However, researchers highlighted that only half of participants met the adherence criteria, suggesting more resources might be required for routine implementation.

Authors recommend larger studies to confirm whether trends observed indeed translate to reduced rates of gestational diabetes and related complications.
