Eric Bieniemy, the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, finds himself in a difficult situation as his son, Elijah Bieniemy, stands accused of shooting his mother, Mia Bieniemy, in Ashburn, Virginia. Despite suffering multiple gunshot wounds, Mia is currently stable. Following the incident, Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid offered his support to the Bieniemy family during this difficult time.
The shooting occurred on July 26, prompting Eric Bieniemy to leave his team to be with his family. His son Elijah, aged 27, was arrested in relation to the incident. Eric recently returned to Kansas City prior to the team’s preseason defeat against the Los Angeles Rams, influenced by Mia’s encouragement during her recovery in Virginia.
In his first public statement about the incident, Bieniemy voiced appreciation for his wife’s recovery, indicating it gave him the assurance needed to resume his football duties. He described Mia as ‘a soldier’ and ‘a saint,’ expressing admiration for her resilience.
First and foremost, yes, she’s on a great road to recovery. Yes, she’s doing great.
While back in Ashburn, Bieniemy stayed connected with the Chiefs team through virtual meetings and remote observation of practices at Missouri Western State University. Even away from the field, he maintained a close involvement with the team, providing insights to Chiefs general manager Brett Veach.
Following a family discussion, Mia expressed approval for his return to Kansas City, and Eric resumed his responsibilities with the team.
Elijah Bieniemy faces charges including malicious wounding, using a firearm in felony commission, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. A mental health competency evaluation is pending before his preliminary court hearing.
Eric extended gratitude to the Hunt family and the entire Chiefs community for their support during this time, stating, “We’re back to football.” Over his tenure, he played a key role in leading the Chiefs to two Super Bowl victories and establishing a successful coaching foundation.
In work developments, Bieniemy spent previous seasons with different teams, including the Chicago Bears, and recently replaced Matt Nagy with the Chiefs. His reinstatement is welcomed by the team, as mentioned by Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton.
Bieniemy’s presence and leadership continue to be valuable assets as the team moves forward.
