Indiana Fever star guard Kelsey Mitchell showcased her impressive skills on Tuesday night by scoring 16 points in the first quarter. She concluded the game with a total of 29 points, helping Indiana secure a 101-95 victory against the Toronto Tempo. This marked the Fever’s fifth consecutive win.
Caitlin Clark also contributed significantly, adding 24 points to the scoreboard. Her contribution was crucial, especially since Mitchell did not play in the fourth quarter. Notably, Clark and Mitchell have made a substantial impact by setting a new WNBA record, scoring at least 20 points each in the same game 16 times this season. They surpassed the previous record set by Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter with the Phoenix Mercury in 2008.
Mitchell’s game also placed her in elite company. Her streak of 20 consecutive games with at least 20 points ties her with four-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson for the longest such streak in history. Despite scoring eight points in less than a minute late in the third quarter, Mitchell left for the locker room and did not return due to overheating, according to head coach Stephanie White.
Aliyah Boston contributed 16 points and Sophie Cunningham made all three of her 3-point attempts, finishing with 13 points. The Fever maintained the lead throughout the game and have now won 10 out of their last 12 games. In contrast, Toronto has faced challenges, losing 11 consecutive matches.
Toronto’s Marina Mabrey attempted a comeback with back-to-back 3-pointers, narrowing the gap to 97-93 late in the final quarter, but the Tempo could not gain the lead.
During the Fever’s visit to Toronto, Sophie Cunningham faced mixed reactions from the fans due to her opposition to transgender girls and women competing in female sports, as stated in an ESPN profile from the previous month. Fans expressed their views, cheering when someone displayed a banner supporting transgender rights during a timeout.
The Fever will face the Dallas Wings on Thursday, while the Toronto Tempo is scheduled to play against the Washington Mystics on Wednesday.
