“Everybody Loves Raymond” star Patricia Heaton recently opened up about her decision to quit drinking, which she made a decade ago. In a discussion with Woman’s World, Heaton revealed how the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and her children leaving home made her reevaluate her life.
Life Changes
When the pandemic struck, Heaton found herself without the familiar anchors of family and work. She shared, “Right before the pandemic, my children had left home and I wasn’t working. The things that had always anchored me—my family and my work—were gone. I started thinking, ‘What am I supposed to do today?'”
Turning to Religion
Heaton noticed a gradual increase in her alcohol consumption during this time. She explained, “A glass of wine while cooking became wine with dinner, wine while cleaning up, and wine while watching ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and ‘Jeopardy!’ One night I realized I had almost finished an entire bottle by myself.” This realization led her to pray, asking for divine assistance in quitting drinking. “God, I think you want me to stop drinking. I would be willing to stop, but you have to make it happen because I can’t. I’m willing, but I’m unable,” she recalled saying.
A Wake-Up Call
An incident with her youngest son highlighted the seriousness of her situation. Struggling to pronounce the word “tradition,” her son’s comment about her speech difficulties “mortified” her. This moment marked the beginning of her commitment to sobriety. The next morning, Heaton felt she received a clear message to change her lifestyle. “That was eight years ago,” she stated.
Heaton cherishes her role as a mother to four sons—Samuel, John, Joseph, and Daniel—whom she shares with her husband, British actor and director David Hunt. They have been married since 1990.
