The son of Eric Bieniemy, an assistant coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy. Authorities in Virginia disclosed these details.
The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to a shooting incident in Ashburn, Virginia, late Sunday. They discovered 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy with multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a hospital and is in stable condition as of Monday.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, the son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, faces charges including malicious wounding, use of a firearm during a felony, and discharging a firearm within a dwelling. He is currently held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
Eric Bieniemy, the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, was at the team’s practice in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Sunday but did not attend Monday’s session.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family,” head coach Andy Reid commented during Monday’s practice. “He has a strong support network here with the team. We will allow time to address the situation.”
Eric Bieniemy took on the role of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator after Matt Nagy departed to join the New York Giants. Between 2018 and 2022, under Bieniemy’s leadership, the Chiefs led the NFL by scoring an average of 30.1 points per game, according to CBS Sports Research.
In the 2025 season, Bieniemy served as the running backs coach for the Chicago Bears. The previous year, he held the position of assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the UCLA Bruins, and in 2023, he was with the Washington Commanders in the same capacity.
