Human Remains Found Near Tucson Not Linked to Missing Woman

2 hours ago 0

The recent discovery of human remains approximately 15 miles from the residence of Nancy Guthrie, located outside Tucson, Arizona, led to online speculation about a possible connection to her disappearance over six months ago. However, officials stated there is currently no evidence linking the remains to the Guthrie case.

Investigators determined that indicators suggest the remains have been present for a longer period than Guthrie’s disappearance. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department released a statement on X confirming that deputies responded to the reports of remains found in a desert region near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard. The statement affirmed, “The remains appear to have been at the location for an extended period of time. There is no indication they are connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation at this time.”

The discovery attracted significant attention due to the ongoing interest in the Guthrie case. Nonetheless, findings of this nature are relatively common in southern Arizona. The Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office conducts around 4,500 death investigations annually. The county reportedly leads the nation in skeletal remains storage as part of its Indigent Interment Program, aiming to identify remains and connect them to next of kin.

Greg Hess, the chief medical examiner, noted in 2024 that the county manages up to 600 sets of skeletal remains, as reported by the National Association of Counties. This figure exceeds that of other counties, primarily due to unidentified migrants who perish in the harsh Sonoran Desert conditions while crossing the border.

“We have more unidentified remains than other places, because of just the nature of the environment,” Hess explained. “It’s really hot and dry and people die outside, and their remains are not protected from the environment. They’ll decompose and become skeletal remains relatively quickly.”

The discovery of remains in such close proximity to Guthrie’s home triggered widespread online interest, typical of high-profile missing persons cases that tend to spotlight more routine findings.

The 84-year-old mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-host of Today, vanished from her home near Tucson on February 1. Officials believe she was taken against her will, though there have been no arrests or updates on her status.

This matter is still unfolding. Further updates will be provided.
