Athens’ Panathenaic Stadium Undergoes Crucial Restoration

1 hour ago 0

In Athens, Greece, the historic Panathenaic Stadium is receiving its first thorough cleaning in over 100 years. Known for hosting marathon runners, rock stars, and the Olympic Games, the stadium’s restoration is in preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

A Significant Historical Venue

The Panathenaic Stadium, or ‘Kallimarmaro’ meaning ‘beautiful marble,’ is built entirely from the same marble used in the Acropolis. This makes the cleaning process delicate and meticulous. The stadium, rebuilt for the 1896 Olympics, serves as the ceremonial starting point for the Olympic flame.

The Cleaning Process

Workers in white and blue overalls carefully clean the 47 tiers of the stadium with low-pressure water sprays. Machines vacuum the water runoff to prevent damage. The cleaning aims to remove dirt and organic material to better appreciate the monument. Areas with less sunlight have more weed growth and dirt accumulation.

Tackling Everyday Stains

The cleaning also removes chewing gum and stains from soft drinks and high heels that have marred the marble over time. Using steam, crews work to restore the original gleam of the ‘Kallimarmaro.’

Revitalizing the Stadium

In addition to cleaning, the stadium will receive a new track, improved lighting, and updated support facilities. This privately funded project is managed by the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the Culture Ministry.

Upcoming Events

The renovation is focused on the stadium’s curved end, or “sling,” in preparation for the torch ceremony on September 10. This will coincide with the Dakar Youth Olympics from October 31 to November 13 in Senegal, marking the first Olympics held in Africa.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry is expected to attend the torch ceremony, adding a poignant touch to the event.
