Aviation Near Miss Averted by Quick-Thinking Air Traffic Controller

A quick-reacting air traffic controller successfully prevented a potential collision late Thursday night involving two American Airlines planes at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The aircraft shared the same flight number and radio frequency, with one landing in Phoenix and the other departing for Chicago.

The controller identified that American Airlines Flight 2482 arriving from Chicago and its counterpart, which had just taken off heading for Chicago, had converging paths and an identical call sign. Promptly, the controller instructed pilots by distinguishing their descriptions using titles “American 2842 departing” and “American 2482 arriving.” This ensured both aircraft maintained a safe distance.

“I’ve been working air traffic for 25 years,” the air traffic controller conveyed to the pilots, as recorded by dispatch audio from ATC.com. “I’ve never seen two aircraft pretty much merge with the same call sign. That’s pretty incredible.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the aircraft adhered to necessary separation while in the air. The FAA is now investigating what led to this incident.

American Airlines explained to CBS News that a delay in the arriving flight from Chicago O’Hare International Airport was a contributing factor. This delayed plane was supposed to land in Phoenix, accept new passengers, and then head back to Chicago using the same call sign. To solve the delay issue, a different aircraft was assigned to ensure the waiting passengers in Phoenix could depart.

In an official statement, American Airlines emphasized the significance of the air traffic controllers’ and pilots’ professionalism. “The diligence and professionalism of air traffic controllers and our pilots ensured required separation was always maintained and the issue was identified and addressed,” the airline stated. “Both flights continued safely and without incident.”
