In Dayton, Ohio, former workers of Fuyao Glass America Inc. shared their troubling experiences with Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif. They described poor working conditions and neglect at the Chinese-linked factory established in an old General Motors plant.
Tiffany Moore, who worked at Fuyao for three years, expressed dissatisfaction due to extreme heat and a lack of concern for workers’ well-being. She addressed a gathering at the International Union of Electrical Workers, where Khanna was present.
My experience at Fuyao was not a good experience. The heat in there is unbearable; they don’t care.
Rep. Ro Khanna visited Dayton to perform Congressional oversight on the company. He is the ranking member of the House Select Subcommittee on the Chinese Communist Party. Khanna had previously asked Fuyao to submit information on issues like wage suppression and worker conditions. However, the company’s reply addressed few of the committee’s concerns and lacked necessary documents.
Khanna expressed concern in an October 1 letter, suggesting that Fuyao might not value congressional oversight or might be hiding information. Despite not receiving permission to visit the factory, Khanna conducted a roundtable discussing these issues.
Demetria Hodges, a former Fuyao employee of five years, discussed the company’s attempts to prevent unionization. She claimed they used scare tactics and offered a temporary pay raise as deterrents.
First they were trying to use scare tactics to get us to not vote for the union. Then they offered a $2 an hour pay raise … which they have never given again.
Another attendee, Darrell, highlighted a tragic incident where a colleague, Ricky Patterson, died in an industrial accident. Despite the traumatic event, operations continued with little regard for employee well-being.
When that guy got smashed by … glass, we had to work the next day, we were stressed out.
The shocking revelation left many at the roundtable expressing disbelief and concern over the company’s practices.
