U.S. Marine Veteran’s Release Highlights Urgent Need for Action on Wrongfully Detained Americans

Kieran Ramsey, chief investigative officer at Global Reach, shared insights into the dire situation faced by U.S. Marine veteran Robert Gilman, who was wrongfully detained in Russia. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Ramsey emphasized the necessity for the immediate release of five other Americans also held in Russia.

Ramsey worked alongside U.S. authorities to secure Gilman’s release after 1,666 days in a Russian prison. He praised former President Donald Trump’s efforts, noting, “Mr. Gilman’s home, no doubt, thanks to President Trump. He pushed hard for Gilman’s release on humanitarian grounds, which ultimately succeeded.” Key figures like Steve Witkoff, Secretary Marco Rubio, and the CIA director played crucial roles in these diplomatic efforts.

Gilman’s ordeal began with an unplanned diversion to Russia while en route to a teaching job in Moldova. Due to illness, he stayed to recuperate, only to be wrongfully assumed drunk and assaulted by Russian police on his way to renew his passport at the U.S. Embassy. Ramsey revealed, “His intended transit through Moscow turned into a nightmare after encounters with Russian police.”

Inside the Russian prison, Gilman faced severe hardships, including beatings and psychological torment. Ramsey recounted, “Gilman endured provocations, forced exercises, and psychological tactics, like threats against his father.” Ramsey dismissed claims about a Boston hit as psychological disinformation.

Now recuperating in a U.S. hospital, Gilman continues his healing journey. State Department designation as a wrongful detainee facilitated immediate medical care upon his return. However, Ramsey’s focus extends to five other Americans imprisoned in Russia.

“All five… meet criteria under the Robert Levinson Hostage-Taking and Accountability Act,” Ramsey told Fox News Digital.

Despite these claims, Ramsey highlighted political obstacles delaying U.S. recognition of these detainees. He explained internal debates about whether designating them as wrongfully detained might complicate diplomatic negotiations.

Ramsey shared the stories of his clients, including Alexander Antonov, a Californian businessman, recently assaulted in prison. Detained while transiting through Russia, Antonov remains a target due to his U.S. nationality.

The case of David Barnes, a Texan battling to recover his children after his Russian ex-wife’s accusations, further illustrates the legal complexities faced by Americans detained abroad.

Another detainee, Olga Jezler, a green card holder detained for carrying CBD oil, highlights the Russians’ readiness to charge Americans with drug trafficking despite legal status.

Andre Khachatoorian, detained while transporting a rifle to Armenia, and Chuck Zimmerman, apprehended in international waters, each suffer severe health challenges, underscoring the urgency of their situations.

Ramsey reiterated the need for immediate action. “Seeing Gilman home was fantastic, but we still have five other families waiting,” he emphasized.
