Venezuela Releases Political Prisoners as Part of Reconciliation Efforts

Venezuelan authorities announced the release of 131 individuals previously detained for political reasons, as reported by non-governmental organizations. This move has been recognized by the United States as a step towards national reconciliation.

The Venezuelan Ministry of Communication and Information stated on social media that these releases were approved by the republic’s courts upon the request of the Public Ministry. This followed a petition for case evaluations by the governmental Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence, established by acting leader Delcy Rodríguez.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted on social media platform X that the release of over 130 political prisoners is a significant stride in Venezuela’s reconciliation process. Since January 3, over 1,000 Venezuelans have regained their freedom. Rubio highlighted the ongoing supervision of face-to-face talks with interim authorities by the United States, as part of a three-phase plan.

The U.S. government, led by President Donald Trump, has reaffirmed its commitment to a plan aimed at stabilizing Venezuela. This strategy includes economic recovery, political reconciliation, and peaceful transition following the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro.

A law granting amnesty was enacted on February 19, shortly after Rodríguez proposed it to foster national unity. Rodríguez took office as acting president on January 5, following a U.S. military operation that resulted in Maduro’s arrest on charges related to drug trafficking. Maduro was subsequently transported to New York.

The amnesty law has led to the release of a broad range of individuals, including opposition leaders, unionists, journalists, students, protesters, and human rights activists detained for political reasons. The government disputes the existence of political prisoners, accusing those detained of plotting against former President Hugo Chávez and his successor, Maduro.

According to Foro Penal, a noted civil organization monitoring the rights of detainees in Venezuela, 391 individuals remained politically imprisoned as of August 10.
