Ukraine Targets Russian Naval Base with Advanced Drones

Ukrainian anti-ship missiles, along with jet-powered aerial drones and sea drones, launched an overnight assault on a significant Russian naval base located on the Black Sea coast. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described this operation as ‘unique’ on Wednesday.

Since the Russian invasion over four years ago, Kyiv-developed drones have consistently targeted Russian vessels in the Black Sea. These strikes have not only affected warships but oil tankers as well. Both nations have coastlines along the Black Sea.

Ukraine’s deployment of uncrewed fleets has restricted the once-dominant operations of the Russian Black Sea navy, according to Kyiv officials. This achievement ranks high among Ukraine’s successes in the ongoing conflict.

Despite these setbacks, Ukrainian authorities believe Russian President Vladimir Putin remains determined to continue the war. They report that his larger army is making slow and costly advances. U.S. diplomatic efforts seek a resolution, yet intelligence suggests Putin plans another rapid mobilization of several hundred thousand troops by the year’s end.

Ukraine Targets Black Sea Port Infrastructure

The Ukrainian military executed a targeted operation at the naval base in Novorossiysk, identified by Zelenskyy as the last major Russian fleet stronghold in the Black Sea. The assault affected air defenses, piers, and other port facilities in Krasnodar region’s city.

Krasnodar region governor Veniamin Kondratyev stated that hundreds of Ukrainian drones targeted Novorossiysk, Anapa, Gelendzhik, and the Temryuk district overnight. Russia’s Defense Ministry reports that air defenses intercepted over 500 drones.

The attack resulted in the death of an eight-year-old in Novorossiysk. Additionally, an injured individual succumbed to injuries in the Temryuk region hospital. Kondratyev noted 12 more injuries in the region. Debris from intercepted drones affected four industrial plants and 21 residential buildings, although damage specifics remain undisclosed.

Novorossiysk hosts a vital international oil terminal, including the Grushovaya oil transshipment complex, a substantial hub for southern Russia’s oil and petroleum exports. In early 2022, the U.S. State Department expressed concerns about Ukraine’s strikes on Novorossiysk, citing impacts on U.S. oil interests in Kazakhstan.

The Caspian Pipeline Consortium manages a pipeline from Kazakhstan’s Caspian coast to Novorossiysk, facilitating major crude exports from Kazakh fields with U.S. energy companies like Chevron and ExxonMobil holding stakes.

Crimea and Russia Exchange Drone Attacks

In Crimea, which Russia annexed illegally, air defenses neutralized 115 Ukrainian drones over Sevastopol during the night, according to Mikhail Razvozhayev, the city’s Russian-appointed leader. The incident damaged 10 apartment buildings and 25 private homes.

Meanwhile, Ukraine reported Russian attacks as well. The Ukrainian air force announced 138 long-range strike drones and additional missiles were fired at Ukraine. Damage occurred at 16 different locations nationwide.

In Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, a large-scale drone attack by Russia led to two deaths and two injuries, told by regional leader Oleksandr Prokudin.

The strikes also destroyed a shopping mall in Zaporizhzhia, located in southern Ukraine, as reported by authorities.
