Extraordinary Precautions Surround Trump’s Aircraft Swap

President Donald Trump utilized a “decoy” Air Force One, protected by U.S. fighter jets, during his flight to the United Kingdom, according to a senior Trump administration official. This measure dispels media concerns that the press corps and staff were left vulnerable to threats after Trump’s flight from Ankara, Turkey, last month.

The security measure underscores the extraordinary precautions taken during the president’s plane swap. The aircraft typically associated with Trump continued to the U.K. without him onboard. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent joined the press corps on the “decoy” plane, and were aware Trump was not aboard.

A photo showed the press boarding the Air Force One from Ankara, with a catering truck visible at the front. Staff and traveling press pool members had been instructed to keep window shades closed during the flight, obstructing views of the fighter escort.

A pool report stated there was little indication of unusual activities at the airport. Press vans were placed far back in the motorcade. Photographers did not observe Trump boarding an aircraft from their typical position beneath the wing. White House staff and reporters boarded the original plane normally, with snack mix bags bearing the presidential seal awaiting them.

Upon boarding, the press was instructed to keep window shades down. A Secret Service agent reinforced the instruction in the press cabin. An opened shade by a photographer led to immediate directions to close it again. A White House wrangler told reporters the Secret Service requested the closed shades.

Trump stated that the aircraft switch was instructed by his security detail and military. “It’s only up to the Secret Service; I just follow what they’d like to do,” Trump told reporters after attending the Freedom 250 Patriot Games in Geneva, Ohio. He emphasized that he follows their instructions.

In discussions at RAF Mildenhall, Britain, Trump mentioned that the plane he traveled on might have faced greater danger post-switch, hinting that it would likely be targeted.

The State Department avoided commenting on the fighter jets. Meanwhile, Trump speculated that the ultimate aircraft may have faced increased risk. “I think actually the plane that I flew on was at greater risk,” he mentioned, considering its likelihood as a target once the public learned of the switch.
