On Wednesday, many Verizon customers across the United States experienced significant service issues. As of 1:10 p.m. ET, Downdetector logged over 2,400 reports of outages. This platform tracks problems by collecting user-submitted reports and noted a sharp rise in complaints starting mid-morning.
Verizon Wireless, a subsidiary of Verizon, offers mobile, landline, and broadband services nationwide. The company has yet to provide a statement on the cause of the outage, and the duration of the disruptions remains unknown.
Extent of the Outages
Most users reported issues with mobile phones, but there were also reports of disruptions in 5G Home Internet and mobile internet services. A heat map on Downdetector highlighted affected areas, including Albuquerque, Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia.
Google Trends data at 1:30 p.m. ET revealed that most searches for “Verizon” in the past hour came from New Mexico.
When the Outage Could Be Resolved
No updates are available yet regarding the resolution of the outage. Verizon explained that network outages occur when unexpected disruptions affect multiple cell sites simultaneously, impacting voice, data, and messaging services in those areas. During such events, customers might see a Network Notification after signing into My Verizon, which provides details about the affected services and current repair status.
Verizon does not provide a specific timeline for restoration, noting that the duration of an outage depends on its cause, the number of impacted sites, and how quickly technicians can carry out repairs. Customers are advised to check the network status page for real-time updates. If an outage is not listed but service remains down, users should try troubleshooting steps, such as restarting the device, confirming coverage, and ensuring Airplane Mode is off.
During an outage, Verizon recommends connecting to Wi-Fi and using Wi-Fi Calling to maintain voice and data access. Devices automatically reconnect once service is restored, though a restart may help re-establish a fresh signal.
Customers who lose service for more than 24 consecutive hours due to a confirmed Verizon outage may request a bill credit within 180 days if they are on standard monthly plans.
