A court in Damascus issued a death sentence in absentia on Tuesday for former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. He was found guilty of crimes against humanity and war crimes during the nation’s extended civil war. Assad has been residing in exile in Russia since his ouster in 2024.
The court’s decision also affected seven other former security officials, including Assad’s brother Maher and cousin Atef Najib. This marked the first ruling of its kind since the regime’s fall in December 2024.
