Community Celebrates Morton Grove National Night Out

Hundreds gathered at the Morton Grove Civic Center on August 4 for the 11th annual National Night Out, a local event hosted by the Morton Grove Police Department. This gathering aimed to strengthen connections between police officers and residents, celebrating community engagement.

Building Relationships

Morton Grove Police Chief Mike Weitzel expressed enthusiasm for what began in the mid-1980s as a nationwide initiative. Held every first Tuesday of August, this event offers residents a relaxed opportunity to meet local police officers and firefighters, breaking down barriers often present during emergencies.

Family-Friendly Activities

From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., attendees enjoyed an array of activities: kids’ games, a touch-a-truck, firefighter hose simulator, rock climbing, inflatable courses, and pony rides. Live music, food stands offering hot dogs, tacos, Kona ice, and product giveaways created a festive atmosphere.

Community Involvement

Kaila Leslie from Morton Grove attended with her family, praising the event’s atmosphere and its support for the community. Community Liaison Officers Justin Jurasz and Sean Lang coordinated the event, emphasizing the importance of building relationships with first responders.

Educational Opportunities

Various organizations and service providers set up informational tables, including the Library, Park District, Public Works, and the Chamber of Commerce. Attendees engaged with drone demonstrations for law enforcement and learned about pet safety and rabies vaccinations from Animal Control Officer Kristin Smith.

Hands-on activities included a chance for children to extinguish a small fire using the fire department’s hose simulator.

Local Leadership

Notable figures at the event included Mayor Janine Witko, Trustees Connie Travis and Rita Minx, and Village Clerk Eileen Scanlon Harford. Representatives from Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita’s office also attended, alongside Police Chief Mike Weitzel and Fire Chief Dennis Kennedy.

Mayor Witko remarked on the significance of the National Night Out in cultivating a community-oriented spirit in Morton Grove. The event’s success highlights the dedication of volunteers and partners, providing a free and enjoyable experience for families.
