ICE Seeks Removal of Teacher Charged with Child Rape

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) aims to remove a Massachusetts teacher accused of multiple child rape charges. An immigration detainer was filed by ICE after the teacher’s arrest. The detainer requests local police to notify ICE before releasing or hold the individual until ICE assumes custody.

Patrick Akpore Nsumei, 54, faces serious charges, including aggravated child rape. ICE filed the request with Lowell Police Department on July 22. ICE plans to assume custody during his state criminal proceedings.

An ICE spokesperson stated, “Under President Trump, criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S. We work diligently to remove these violent offenders from communities.”

Newsweek sought comments from Boston Public Schools and Nsumei’s attorney but did not receive them.

Nsumei remains in custody without bail at Billerica House of Correction. Judge John Coffey ruled he poses a threat, holding him for up to 120 days during the criminal case.

Prosecutor Sheehan McCarthy revealed the victim reported abuse on June 27. Court allegations indicate abuse occurred repeatedly from 2017 to 2021, posing a community danger.

Defense attorney Thomas Mixon argues against the allegations, citing a lack of physical evidence.

Nsumei worked as a science teacher in Boston. His name and photo have been removed from the school’s webpage. Allegations don’t involve any student from Boston Public Schools.

The school district hasn’t confirmed Nsumei’s employment status.

The aggravated rape charge potentially carries a life sentence, with parole eligibility after ten years. A probable cause hearing is set for September 1.
