President Zelenskyy Addresses Missile Threat
In Kyiv, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that his country is once again receiving early warnings about incoming Russian missiles. This follows a concerning period when such alerts were not forthcoming. During recent strikes, civilians were left exposed due to a lack of timely warnings. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of these alerts in saving lives by allowing civilians to seek shelter and enabling the military to respond strategically.
For at least a week, the Ukrainian government lacked vital intelligence on ballistic missiles targeting the capital. The president noted that discussions with American officials, including a call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, helped restore this crucial communication. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the improved intelligence, highlighting its significance in protecting the population.
International Diplomacy and Military Assistance
On a visit to Norway, Zelenskyy discussed mutual frustrations with Rubio concerning intelligence sharing and military support from the U.S. He stressed the need for prompt delivery of military supplies, including American-made Patriot air-defense interceptors. The Ukrainian leader also addressed limitations in using SpaceX’s Starshield satellite internet service due to imposed speed restrictions.
Amid ongoing conflicts, Russia launched another wave of missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian civilian areas, resulting in multiple casualties. Zelenskyy continued to seek additional support from the U.S. and European allies. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, alongside Zelenskyy in Norway, aimed to facilitate negotiations with Russia.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb joined Zelenskyy in Oslo. Witkoff planned to engage Russian officials in St. Petersburg with ideas exchanged during the Oslo meeting. Stubb remarked positively on the discussions’ potential to promote peace.
Political Developments and International Relations
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed openness to new U.S. proposals, though he remained skeptical about significant changes. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Zelenskyy to negotiate a settlement with Russia, criticizing the perceived imbalance in U.S.-Ukraine relations.
Zelenskyy had candid discussions with Rubio following perceived slowdowns in American support, attributing them to political decisions. However, Rubio refuted claims of intentional harm to Ukraine, attributing delays to global demand and supply limitations.
European Nations Step Up Support
With concerns over Russia’s ambitions in Europe, European countries have increased their support for Ukraine. Germany’s Kiel Institute reports European contributions at 237 billion euros ($266 billion), surpassing the U.S. offer of 115 billion euros ($129 billion). However, Europe relies heavily on American-made military assets, complicating supply dynamics.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas questioned U.S. neutrality in peace efforts. Ukrainian officials allege pressure from the Trump administration to surrender territory for peace.
Casualties and Infrastructure Damage
In the last 24 hours, Russian missile and drone strikes have resulted in numerous casualties in the Kyiv region. Four fatalities and 27 injuries were reported, including those of several children. Attacks damaged several warehouses in the Obukhiv district and hundreds of buildings in Bucha.
On a highway connecting Kyiv and Odesa, additional fatalities occurred when two vehicles caught fire due to Russian attacks. Attacks on warehouses in Dnipro led to two more deaths.
Ukraine’s national grid operator, Ukrenergo, reported power outages in 12 regions due to the assaults. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that its operations targeted logistics centers, ports, and ships in Odesa. Meanwhile, Ukrainian air defenses intercepted numerous Russian drones overnight.
