A manhunt for a New York fugitive concluded on Sunday with the apprehension of Thomas David Ryan, 32, in the Gilboa area of Schoharie County. He was wanted for allegedly killing his 70-year-old father, Robert Ryan, and setting the family home on fire.
Authorities began the search after Robert Ryan was found deceased in his burning home in Greenville on Thursday evening. The fire, which was determined to be arson, led investigators to treat the incident as a homicide.
Thomas Ryan had no known ties to the Greenville area, and he did not reside with his father. Investigators believe Ryan left the scene in his father’s gray 2016 Toyota Prius. Law enforcement had described him as “armed and dangerous” during the search.
Authorities from various agencies, including the FBI, New York State Police, and several local police departments, collaborated in the investigation. Ryan was tracked through surveillance footage from local homes and businesses, as well as checks on shelters across New York. He was reportedly familiar with the Plattsburgh area and known to use trains for travel, prompting cooperation with rail operators.
