Charlie Hatcher Defeats Rep. Andy Ogles in Tennessee Republican Primary

Charlie Hatcher, a Republican challenger and former Tennessee commissioner of agriculture, defeated incumbent Rep. Andy Ogles in a primary challenge. The contest, though not initially a major focus in the 2026 primaries, highlighted internal dynamics within the Republican Party.

President Donald Trump and Tennessee Republican Governor Bill Lee showed differing endorsements. Ogles, aligning with Trump, faced significant opposition in his district over environmental issues. The Invest in Tomorrow Coalition super PAC invested roughly $2 million opposing Ogles, supporting Hatcher instead. This PAC raised $6.7 million this year, marking Ogles as a significant spending target.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Ogles expressed that the large expenditure was an attempt to penalize lawmakers challenging government funding for renewable energy. He has called for reducing renewable energy investments initiated under the Biden Administration.

The super PAC received major backing from Chris Larsen, chairman of financial technology company Ripple, and a frequent Democratic donor. Larsen contributed over $5 million to support Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign.

Ogles also attributes his defeat to his close relationship with Trump. He believes his straightforward communication on issues made him a target. “It’s because I’m close to the president,” Ogles stated. “It is because I am outspoken.”

Charlie Hatcher, a fifth-generation dairy farmer from Tennessee, emphasizes a pragmatic approach. In campaign messaging, he highlighted his dedication to common sense and collaboration. Hatcher expressed support for the Trump Administration and Speaker Johnson’s agenda.

Governor Lee endorsed Hatcher, citing his conservative values and longstanding personal relationship. “He served as my commissioner of agriculture; I know Charlie,” Lee stated. “Charlie has stood with President Trump since day one.”

Meanwhile, Trump consistently supported Ogles, praising his performance as a congressman. Trump described Ogles as an essential contributor and inspiration to Congress in a post on Truth Social.

With the primary victory secured, Hatcher will move on to the general election, where he is heavily favored. In previous elections, he won re-election in 2024 with a substantial margin.
