NBC News projects that Sen. Marsha Blackburn has secured the Republican nomination for governor of Tennessee, defeating Rep. John Rose. This victory comes after President Donald Trump opted not to endorse any candidate in the race.
Blackburn, aged 74, made history by becoming the first woman to represent Tennessee in the Senate in 2018 after serving in the House since 2003. Her success in the gubernatorial race would further establish historical precedent as she would be Tennessee’s first female governor. The state of Tennessee, known for its Republican leanings, positions Blackburn as a strong contender to succeed the term-limited Republican Gov. Bill Lee.
Her opponent in the general election will be Jerri Green, who won the Democratic nomination and serves as a member of the Memphis City Council.
Sen. Blackburn is recognized as one of the most conservative members of the Senate, often noted for her views on abortion, transgender rights, and criticism of China’s influence. Despite Trump refraining from involvement in the race, both Blackburn and Rose have leveraged Trump’s popularity. A pro-Blackburn entity, the Tennessee Freedom Fund, utilized Trump’s name in their advertising, featuring clips in which Trump praises Blackburn.
During a rally in Washington, Trump expressed his admiration for Blackburn, stating, “Unfortunately, she’s running for governor,” and shared his reluctance to lose her from the Senate.
“We’re proud of you.” — Donald Trump
The Nashville Banner reported that Trump, during a flight to Memphis on Air Force One, conveyed to Tennessee’s congressional delegation his decision not to endorse Blackburn due to his connection with Rose. Two congressional members present confirmed this conversation.
Rep. John Rose, the representative for Tennessee’s 6th District, is known for his history as a state agriculture commissioner and loyalty to Trump. Despite no endorsement, Rose invested nearly $13 million from personal funds into his campaign.
This gubernatorial race is among few instances where Trump remained neutral. In previous elections, Trump has simultaneously endorsed multiple GOP candidates, like the races in South Carolina.
The election cycle also features several senators vying for governorships. Alabama’s GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville secured his nomination, whereas Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet did not succeed in Colorado. Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar is also participating in the Minnesota gubernatorial election.
