President Donald Trump has called on lawmakers to swiftly pass the Protect College Sports Act, emphasizing the need for action before Congress recesses.
During a special White House event, Trump celebrated the achievements of athletes and representatives from Team USA at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. He highlighted the contribution of the collegiate athletic system to America’s Olympic success, with 88% of Team USA originating from college sports. Trump urged Congress to pass the bill, which he committed to signing immediately.
Trump’s Appeal for Bipartisanship
At the reception, Trump stressed the importance of bipartisan cooperation, stating, “We have to get that done. If we don’t, we’re very foolish. Nobody knows what will happen.” He underlined his administration’s commitment to safeguarding traditional sporting values.
Establishing a Uniform Framework
The Protect College Sports Act is a bipartisan initiative focused on offering the NCAA enhanced antitrust protections. It also aims at establishing consistent guidelines for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) compensation and transfer protocols.
Challenges in the Senate
The Senate has encountered obstacles, notably with an amendment proposed by Republican senators Josh Hawley, Jim Banks, and Tommy Tuberville. The amendment seeks to preserve state laws restricting biological males from competing in women’s sports.
Senator Hawley expressed concerns, particularly about how the bill might affect Missouri’s stance on the matter. “I’ve reviewed the current draft of the Senate NIL bill and I am very concerned it PREEMPTS Missouri’s law banning men in women’s sports,” he wrote.
Trump’s Continued Advocacy
Despite the challenges, Trump remains hopeful for the bill’s passage. His administration issued a statement urging legislative action to resolve legal ambiguities, provide liability protections, and ensure equitable standards across college sports.
Trump’s push came as the Senate prepared for its five-week recess. He encouraged completion of the bill to protect the future of college sports and maintain opportunities for student-athletes.
