Wisconsin state Rep. Francesca Hong is leading the Democratic gubernatorial primary, but past social media posts are drawing criticism for her views on American holidays.
Hong, associated with the Democratic Socialists of America, faced backlash after a November 2020 post suggested canceling Thanksgiving. She stated it was to stop celebrating colonialism, calling it the original superspreader event that harmed Indigenous people and women. Hong later retracted her statement, referring to Thanksgiving as her “favorite holiday.”
Her views on other holidays also raise eyebrows. On Valentine’s Day 2022, she expressed disinterest in what she considered a capitalistic approach to celebrating love, highlighting the challenges faced by service workers.
Many on the left have questioned holidays like Thanksgiving and Independence Day due to their historical connections. However, Hong’s consistent criticism of several significant celebrations is gaining attention. In 2019, she mentioned avoiding work during Halloween and expressed disdain for costumes.
Social media users, both conservative and liberal, have compared her to the Grinch, implying a dislike for holidays. Hong’s critical stance also extends to Independence Day’s fireworks, which she questioned regarding curfews.
Steve Guest, a Republican commentator, noted that if Hong aimed to challenge traditional values, her approach wouldn’t change.
Some say Hong dislikes Christmas, citing a post where she felt “attacked” by a Christmas tree background. Nevertheless, she has also celebrated the holiday in various posts.
Conservatives often claim Democrats are against Christmas, an assertion liberals challenge. Despite jokes about her holiday dislikes, some find her attitude refreshing. A Las Vegas DSA member commented on her unique character, likening her holiday opinions to a personal trait.
Hong’s campaign declined to comment when contacted by Fox News Digital.
