The Democratic Senate race in Michigan is heating up, presenting a significant test for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) within the party. Abdul El-Sayed, a candidate with progressive backing, is contesting against moderate Haley Stevens. The primary election is a key battleground that reflects the ideological divide among Democrats.
Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, provided insights into this political clash on Fox News. Host Bill Hemmer dissected the financial aspects of the race, illustrating the deep divisions within Michigan’s Democratic Party through the fundraising dynamics.
Jocelyn Benson emerged as a pivotal figure after winning the Democratic nomination for governor in Michigan, a crucial state known for its role in national elections. The Associated Press confirmed Benson’s victory over Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.
As Michigan’s Secretary of State for the past eight years, Benson aims to keep the governor’s office under Democratic control. This effort comes as Republicans plan to challenge for the seat. Benson will confront either Rep. John James or businessman Perry Johnson in the general election, depending on the GOP primary outcome.
Benson, a former dean of Wayne State University Law School, first became Secretary of State in 2018 and secured re-election four years later. She gained national recognition in 2020 by defending Michigan’s election systems amidst unverified claims of voter fraud propagated by then-President Donald Trump, following his loss to Joe Biden in Michigan.
Her gubernatorial campaign emphasizes her accomplishments in Lansing, focusing on election security, office efficiency, and her efforts to protect democracy. Her policy agenda includes reducing family expenses, expanding affordable housing, safeguarding reproductive rights, and enhancing public education.
Chris Swanson gained attention in the summer of 2020 during nationwide protests against George Floyd’s death. His peaceful approach in Flint, where he removed his body armor to march with protestors, earned him recognition.
By 2024, Swanson had taken on the role of a vocal backer of Biden and Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. He supported Harris after Biden’s campaign stumbled during a debate against Trump.
