Several news organizations have formed relationships with AI journalism groups like the Tarbell Center for AI Journalism. Tarbell places fellows with outlets such as Bloomberg, Time, NBC News, The Guardian, and the Los Angeles Times. These relationships, often not disclosed, raise questions about transparency. Tarbell supports fellows with salaries ranging from $60,000 to $110,000 depending on experience.
The Tarbell Center emphasizes independent journalism to clarify debates on AI and hold companies accountable. It assures there is no editorial control by donors. They have sponsored over 28 journalists on topics including AI safety and misinformation. The Tarbell Center receives funding from groups advocating for AI safety, with significant contributions from Coefficient Giving, backed by Dustin Moskovitz, an Anthropic investor. Some news articles about Anthropic and AI safety often do not disclose Tarbell’s involvement.
For example, Harry Booth, a reporter with Time, covered Anthropic without noting his affiliation with Tarbell. Similarly, Robert Hart from The Verge did not mention his fellowship when writing about OpenAI. Time explains its editors decide on disclosure, asserting a commitment to transparency. Conversely, NBC News includes notes about Tarbell’s support when applicable.
The debate continues on the necessity of transparency in media affiliations. Tarbell requires transparency about placements and funding for its fellows. However, those hired full-time by their host publications post-fellowship may not maintain such disclosures.
