FIFA Executives Distance from Infantino’s Failed World Cup Profit Plan

Two prominent FIFA executives, Arsène Wenger and Mattias Grafström, *expressed their disapproval* of Gianni Infantino’s unsuccessful initiative to sell stakes in future World Cup profits to private investors. Wenger stated he was unaware of the $20 billion proposal and emphasized the importance of abandoning it. Grafström conveyed disappointment in an email to FIFA staff.

The plan generated significant controversy. Kevin Lamour, FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer, criticized the project, labeling it as the “endeavor of one person” and condemning the deception involved. He stressed that FIFA staff deserve more respect.

Wenger, the organization’s Chief of Global Football Development, became aware of the plan through media coverage. Infantino retracted the proposal after severe backlash, including the threat of a FIFA boycott by UEFA.

“The decision to withdraw the project was absolutely necessary,” Wenger asserted.

The plan involved creating a subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), to handle profit-driven activities. It aimed to raise $4.2 billion from investors for about 20% equity in FFE. Thrive Eternal, initiated by Joshua Kushner, was selected as the primary investor.

FIFA’s 211 member federations, legal owners of FIFA as a nonprofit per Swiss law, were offered $20 million each. Infantino unveiled the project details shortly after the successful North American World Cup.

Infantino received criticism for his association with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was honored with a FIFA Peace Prize. Challenges surfaced during the World Cup, including logistical issues for Iran’s team and a Somali referee’s denied entry.

Grafström assured staff of continued support and urged them to focus on FIFA’s mission. Infantino has not publicly addressed the situation but shared member federation letters supporting him on Instagram.

Infantino, over 10 years as president, faces a potential re-election challenge next March in Morocco. UEFA is reportedly searching for an alternative candidate, with a deadline for opposition to enter by November 18.
