Significant Events in Chicago’s History on August 3

Flashback: August 3, 1991

Fans were in a frenzy in the front row of Lollapalooza at the World Music Theatre in Tinley Park on August 3, 1991. This marked the festival’s debut year. Bands such as Jane’s Addiction, Living Colour, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Rollins Band, Butthole Surfers, Ice-T, and Nine Inch Nails energized the crowd in a nine-hour performance.

Greg Kot, a Tribune critic, highlighted the festival’s uniqueness, stating it could be the most broadly ambitious music event ever, as it turned into a road show unlike Woodstock or Live Aid. By 2005, the festival became an annual event in Grant Park.

Luther South High School alum Mike Conley completed a remarkable triple jump of 59 feet, 7½ inches, initially deemed unofficial due to minor wind discrepancies. Nonetheless, his jump of 57 feet, 10¼ inches set a new Olympic record. Conley performed with excellence, ranking first globally in triple jump six times and maintaining top 10 rankings in long jump on several occasions.

Nellie Fox’s Hall of Fame Induction in 1997

Nellie Fox, the Chicago White Sox second baseman, was honored with a posthumous induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

August 3, 2024: Football Legends Honored

Chicago Bears legends Steve McMichael and Devin Hester were commemorated with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Despite a prolonged struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), McMichael’s legacy continues, although he passed away on April 23, 2025.
