Sousa, a women’s rights advocate, and journalist Brandi Kruse. The rally drew support from Washington high school athletes and aimed to support female athletes and Cunningham’s position.

Protests in Portland

In Portland, a similar show of support emerged. Dozens, including prominent figures like former Olympian Inga Thompson and attorney Kara Dansky, gathered outside the Moda Center before the game. Their presence was met with counter-protests from supporters of trans athletes. The opposition included individuals who wore apparel expressing their views with slogans like ‘Protect Trans Kids.’

These counter-protesters expressed a range of perspectives. Some declined to engage in dialogue, while others made the case for including trans women in women’s sports, often using strong language.

During the game, Cunningham faced vocal opposition. The Portland Fire fans displayed trans and gay pride symbols and loudly booed her appearances. Despite the hostility, Cunningham reiterated her commitment to her beliefs, stating her resolve to be true to herself.
