Caleb Komolafe, Northwestern’s standout running back, became the center of attention during Big Ten media days. He had a remarkable season in 2025, rushing for 941 yards and 11 touchdowns on 190 carries. In the era of the transfer portal, such a performance could have opened doors to different opportunities. However, Komolafe chose to remain with Northwestern.

When asked about his decision, he attributed it to the camaraderie and relationships within the team, as well as the influence of Coach David Braun and the staff. “Coach Braun is a great leader. I love my position coach, Coach Aristotle Thompson. I’ve grown significantly under his guidance,” Komolafe mentioned. The addition of Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator also played a role in his decision.

Impact of Chip Kelly

Chip Kelly’s entrance as Northwestern’s new offensive coordinator was a significant development for the team. Komolafe was informed by Coach Braun during the winter, while sitting at home, that Kelly was joining the staff. Friends bombarded him with messages upon hearing the news. “It was surreal,” Komolafe said. Kelly is often referred to as a mastermind, and his presence is expected to help Komolafe advance in his game.

In 2024, Komolafe struggled, recording only 139 yards over 10 games, but stepped up as a starter in 2025 after Cam Porter suffered an injury. During the season, Komolafe developed decisiveness and showed growth, ending the year with five yards per carry.

Consistency and Growth

Coach Braun emphasized the importance of Komolafe’s consistency and dedication. “The discipline he showed in his routines, recovery, and studying the playbook was vital,” Braun noted. Komolafe’s commitment paid off, especially in the latter half of the season, positioning him as a potential All-Big Ten player.

As Komolafe enters his fourth season, he’s focused on improving his passing game skills, understanding defensive dynamics, and enhancing pre-snap reads. Kelly’s guidance is aiding his learning process.

“It’s been insightful to gain tips from him and improve my game understanding,” Komolafe stated.

Depth in the Running Backs

The running back room is strong, comprising Joseph Himon II and Gavin Sawchuk, alongside Komolafe. Himon, known for his speed, contributed 486 yards last season, while Sawchuk added 486 yards and eight touchdowns after transferring from Florida State.

Thompson promotes a supportive atmosphere where players cheer for one another’s success, reinforcing a strong unit.

Kelly’s Offensive Challenge

Coach Braun underscored Kelly’s reputation as an outstanding offensive coordinator. Northwestern aims to revitalize an offense that struggled last season, ranking 96th in the FBS. They averaged 346.1 yards and 23.4 points per game, with the running attack ranked 65th.

Quarterback Adjustments

This offseason, Northwestern welcomed quarterback Aidan Chiles from Michigan State and retained Ryan Boe. Nicco Marchiol from West Virginia is also part of the roster despite a foot injury last season.

Despite speculation, Brahm hesitated to finalize Chiles as a starter so that competition can determine positions.
