Billy Ray Smith Jr.: A Legacy in Football and Broadcasting

Billy Ray Smith Jr., a key figure in the San Diego Chargers’ defense during the 1980s, passed away at age 64 after battling dementia linked to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). His NFL journey began when he was drafted fifth overall in the 1983 NFL Draft, becoming the first defensive player selected that year.

Smith brought an impressive college football résumé to San Diego. At Arkansas, he achieved unanimous All-America honors twice and set a school record for tackles for loss. Later, in 2000, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, solidifying his place in sports history.

The son of NFL linebacker Billy Ray Smith Sr., he quickly became integral to the Chargers’ defense. During his career from 1983-1992, Smith played 140 games, achieving 26.5 sacks, 15 interceptions, and 14 fumble recoveries. His performance earned him twice second-team All-AFC honors and second-team All-Pro recognition in 1989. He was voted the Chargers’ Defensive Player of the Year in 1985 and 1986 and team MVP in 1987. Eventually, he was named one of the franchise’s 50 Greatest Players.

Beyond football, Smith transitioned into sports broadcasting. After retiring in 1992, he remained in San Diego, becoming a familiar voice within the local community. He worked as a television sports anchor for KGTV, contributed to Chargers preseason broadcasts, and served as a college football analyst for Fox Sports. His co-host role on “The Scott and B.R. Show” on XX Sports Radio 1090 connected him to fans, extending his influence in sports media.

Smith’s family shared that he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, demonstrating remarkable bravery, dignity, and strength in facing dementia caused by CTE.

Outside of football, Smith was cherished as a husband, father, and community figure. He leaves behind his wife, KGTV anchor Kimberly Hunt, and their family. For Chargers fans, Smith is remembered not only as a skilled linebacker but also as a broadcaster whose voice continues to resonate with football lovers in San Diego.
