T‑Mobile and Verizon Users Report Widespread Outages

T‑Mobile and Verizon subscribers across the United States experienced service disruptions on Monday. Many received SOS messages, indicating no service availability. As of 8:40 p.m. ET, reports of outages had declined to fewer than 7,000, down from over 60,000 earlier that day according to DownDetector data. Major areas affected included New York City, Columbia, South Carolina, Springfield, Ohio, Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis.

Verizon customers also encountered issues, with similar reports of service disruptions. However, the volume of complaints was less than those for T‑Mobile. Verizon stated that their network was operating normally nationwide, attributing any connection issues to the outage on T-Mobile’s network.

AT&T users reported problems too, but those resolved quickly. T-Mobile assured customers that teams were working to address the technical challenges, emphasizing their commitment to reconnect users swiftly.

Understanding the SOS Message

An iPhone displaying “SOS” or “SOS Only” indicates the device is disconnected from its regular network. However, it can still make emergency calls through another carrier. This feature ensures access to emergency services like 911. The SOS alert might appear due to poor reception, carrier outages, or issues with SIM cards or network settings. Regular phone functions typically resume once the device reconnects to its network.

Outage Maps Show Affected Areas

DownDetector provided maps displaying major cities experiencing outages. Feedback from users highlighted disruptions in cities like Seattle, West Sacramento, California, Irvine, California, Albuquerque, Orlando, and St. Louis.

Verizon’s outage map showed clusters of complaints across the country. These disruptions were significant enough to prompt an alert from DownDetector, indicating a potential service interruption rather than normal activity fluctuations.

Expert Insights on the Outage

Roger Entner, an analyst with Recon Analytics, explained that a national disruption typically suggests a core network issue. He remarked that such interruptions could result from network upgrades causing a cascading effect. T-Mobile engineers would have prioritized identifying the problem and reversing changes during the initial critical period.

Entner highlighted that while these outages are infrequent, they are inevitable for all carriers. Consumers might find it difficult to distinguish between localized and core network outages due to the similar experience of disconnected service.
