Michael Kim achieved a remarkable feat on Friday during the 3M Open. At age 33, he aimed for only the 16th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history, setting sights on a score of 59 as he approached the 18th hole.
Kim’s wedge shot on the par-5 18th hole landed him 24 feet from the pin, presenting a chance to solidify his place in golf history. His main focus was ensuring the putt reached the hole. He said, “I tend to leave those short when it’s that uphill and I just wanted to make sure to get it there.” His putt found the bottom of the cup, and a jubilant Kim celebrated with fist pumps.
Before the last holes, Kim understood the significance of hitting the history books. Determined, he thought, “This is the moment to get into the history books. Let’s go for it, step up, and hit some really good shots,” Kim recalled.
Kim’s consistency was evident as he initiated a series of strong play from the third hole. He made five consecutive birdies, then added three more within the next four holes, closing with four straight birdies.
His putter performance stood out. Eight of his 11 birdies were from beyond 10 feet. Kim described this, saying, “When you hit a putt and it does exactly what you envisioned, it’s an awesome feeling. It felt that way all day.”
Kim’s exceptional round earned him a three-shot lead over Ben Kohles, although he recognized the tournament was far from over. “Today was an awesome day, but still, I’m only halfway there. I need to stay focused for the weekend,” he noted.
Kim’s 59 is notable, marking the fourth such score on tour since 2024. Prior to this, Jake Knapp achieved a 59 during the 2025 Cognizant Classic. Jim Furyk still holds the PGA Tour record with a 58, achieved at the 2016 Travelers Championship.
