The United States Coast Guard (USCG) announced that only one of three individuals missing at sea was rescued alive. A 15-year-old boater was saved after being found clinging to a capsized vessel on Monday off the coast of Alaska. The rescue team discovered him in a dire medical situation.
The survivor was experiencing hypothermia after being located on the overturned skiff. The rescue effort began after the Alaska State Troopers alerted the Coast Guard about an overdue boat. The vessel, an 18-foot fishing skiff, had overturned approximately four miles east of St. Lawrence Island.
Alerted on Sunday evening, the Coast Guard initiated a search early Monday; adverse weather and poor visibility delayed the rescue effort. The Coast Guard deployed an aircrew which spotted the survivor and provided him with a raft equipped with survival gear.
A good Samaritan vessel played a critical role in the rescue, helping to save the teenager and retrieve the bodies of two deceased mariners. After the rescue, all involved were transported to Nome, Alaska.
