Fatal Bear Attack in Glacier National Park: Investigation Findings

Authorities have concluded that Anthony Pollio, a 33-year-old man from Davie, Florida, died in Glacier National Park due to a bear attack in May. An interagency report confirmed that he was attacked by a grizzly bear, marking the first fatal bear attack in the park since 1998.

Pollio was on a road trip when he entered the park on May 3. He planned to hike to Mt. Brown Lookout to watch the sunset. At approximately 6:30 p.m., Pollio started his hike, and a couple of hours later, he messaged his girlfriend. He mentioned he had climbed over 2,000 feet and had another 2,400 feet to reach his destination. This was his last known communication.

A multi-day search ensued after Pollio was reported missing. On May 6, search teams discovered his remains below the Mt. Brown trail, about 2.5 miles from the trailhead. His body exhibited signs of severe trauma, including bites and claw marks indicative of a bear attack.

Authorities uncovered evidence that suggested Pollio startled the bear while hiking in dim light. The bear, likely an adult male grizzly aged around 15 years, lacked any prior record of aggression towards people. During the encounter, Pollio discharged his bear spray but was ultimately overtaken by the bear.

Investigation findings indicate that Pollio was likely the victim of a defensive attack by the startled bear. DNA samples were used to identify the bear as a long-term park resident. No specific bear management actions were detailed, but officials urged park visitors to stay alert due to numerous trails flagged for bear activity.

While the national parks reported over 200 deaths last year, wildlife was involved in very few incidents. Ongoing alerts for bear activity in the area’s national parks highlight the necessity of vigilance for all visitors.
