Bald Eagle Near Big Bear Believed to Be Jackie the Livestream Star

A bald eagle was rescued near Big Bear over the weekend and is likely Jackie, one half of a well-known pair featured in a long-running nest livestream. This information comes from Friends of Big Bear Valley, the wildlife nonprofit behind the camera. Based on videos and photos from the public and rescuers, the organization stated on social media that “it is apparent that the rescued eagle is likely Jackie.” The eagle is receiving care at an appropriate facility.

The adult bald eagle was spotted on the ground near Dana Point Park last Thursday and Friday. The park is located in Fawnskin, adjacent to Big Bear Lake. During the time on the ground, witnesses saw the eagle involved in a confrontation with two younger eagles. Footage confirmed the adult defended itself with its talons but could not fly far. This area is managed by the L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation.

The nonprofit reported that Jackie, the long-time star of the webcam since 2015, had not been seen around the nest for several days. Viewers have followed Jackie and her mate, Shadow, as they faced challenges with eggs and offspring while successfully raising eaglets at a nest 120 feet high in a Jeffrey pine. Their latest offspring, Sandy and Luna, began flying late last month.

The eagle was retrieved Saturday by San Dimas Raptor Rescue personnel and taken to a specialized rehabilitation facility where care is ongoing. L.A. County Parks and Recreation celebrated the collaboration to secure the needed care for the bald eagle.

Friends of Big Bear Valley cautioned against misinformation and online speculation about the incident and the eagle’s identity. They advised not to contact the rescue agency directly due to limited resources.
