Zaccharie Risacher’s Unusual Trade from Atlanta Hawks to Dallas Mavericks

Zaccharie Risacher, selected first in the 2024 NBA Draft, is already leaving the Atlanta Hawks after two seasons. A significant trade sends the 21-year-old to the Dallas Mavericks, marking an early end to Atlanta’s risky investment.

The trade involves Atlanta receiving Lu Dort from Oklahoma City Thunder. Oklahoma City gains two second-round picks, while Dallas acquires Risacher and Ryan Nembhard from Atlanta.

This move is uncommon for top picks. Draft-night trades are quick, and Andrew Wiggins was famously traded 57 days post-draft for Kevin Love, but trading a top pick after two years for basketball reasons is exceptional.

Moving after 142 career games, Risacher joins Markelle Fultz, traded due to injuries after 33 games, and Pervis Ellison, traded after one season in Sacramento.

Unlike Fultz or Ellison, Risacher’s trade wasn’t health-related. Atlanta chose not to continue with him after two seasons.

Risacher was part of a disappointing 2024 NBA Draft class, featuring names like Alex Sarr and Cody Williams in the top 10. Many argued for Sarr over Risacher at the time.

The draft’s quality was highlighted by Victor Wembanyama in 2023 and Cooper Flagg in 2025.

The 6-foot-8 Risacher entered the league as a versatile wing, with his potential tied to his shooting. He scored 12.6 points per game as a rookie, which dropped to 9.6 in his second year.
