U.S. Cities Experience Worst Air Quality Due to Canadian Wildfires

Three U.S. cities faced severe air quality issues on Friday due to smoke from Canadian wildfires. Detroit, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. topped the air quality index ranking among major global cities.

Detroit’s Air Quality Readings

Between 1 and 2 p.m. ET, Detroit recorded a U.S. Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 240, indicating ‘very unhealthy’ air conditions. This placed it at the top of IQAir’s global ranking for worst air quality.

Other Affected Cities

Chicago followed with a 199 AQI reading, classified as ‘unhealthy,’ and Washington, D.C. had a reading of 172. New York City was eighth with a reading of 131.

Outside the U.S., Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Delhi, India, and Jakarta, Indonesia also experienced poor air quality.

Understanding PM2.5

Particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) is a common pollutant because of its tiny size and omnipresence from sources like vehicles and industrial emissions. These particles can penetrate buildings and enter the lungs and bloodstream, posing health risks.

PM2.5 frequently exceeds safety limits, appearing as the main pollutant in AQI reports.

Temporary Conditions Due to Wildfires

The ranking reflects temporary conditions influenced by the wildfires rather than typical air quality levels in the U.S. cities. Wildfire smoke from northern Ontario spread south, affecting areas hundreds of miles from the fires.

Health Advisories and Precautions

Officials urged residents in affected areas to stay indoors or use high-quality masks outdoors. New York City canceled outdoor activities and distributed masks due to the combination of smoke and heat.

Recommendations for Masks

Experts recommend using N95 or KN95 respirators to filter PM2.5 particles effectively, emphasizing the need for proper fit to prevent air leakage.

The Public Health Agency of Canada advises using well-fitting N95, KN95, or KF94 respirators to reduce exposure to fine particles in wildfire smoke.
