Fatal Encounter During Traffic Stop in Houston

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a father, husband, and business owner, lived in the United States for 35 years after emigrating from Mexico. Recently, his life was tragically cut short by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a traffic stop in Houston.

The fatal incident occurred as the Trump administration intensified its mass deportation campaign. Mr. Araujo was heading to work when his life ended. His son, Ronaldo Salgado, expressed the family’s desire for Mr. Araujo to be remembered as a dedicated family man who valued hard work.

“He wanted nothing else in life but to provide for his wife and see his sons become great people,” Ronaldo Salgado said, aiming to preserve his father’s legacy beyond the tragic event.

Details of the Incident

ICE agents were reportedly searching for someone else during the traffic stop. The interaction between Mr. Araujo and the immigration agents remains unclear. Initially, federal authorities claimed that Mr. Araujo was identified as an “illegal alien” and resisted arrest when stopped around 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday. ICE later stated Mr. Araujo had collided with an ICE vehicle, ignored orders, and attempted to run over an officer, prompting an agent to shoot in self-defense.

Mr. Araujo was struck in the abdomen and succumbed to his injuries hours later at a hospital, as reported by the Houston Fire Department. However, a spokeswoman from the Department of Homeland Security later clarified that Mr. Araujo was not the intended target of the operation, revealing that federal officers were searching for a different individual.

Disputed Accounts

Witnesses have challenged the official narrative provided by authorities. At the time of the stop, Mr. Araujo was traveling to his workplace at a construction site alongside three other men. Among them was his younger brother, Victor Hugo Salgado Araujo. As of Friday, these men were detained in immigration facilities in Conroe, Texas, near Houston.
