Ruemmler, previously serving as Goldman Sachs’ chief lawyer, voluntarily appeared as part of the investigation into Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted sex trafficker.
Details of the Investigation
Both Republican and Democrat lawmakers challenged Ruemmler’s assertions that her ties to Epstein were minimal. Democrats suggested she should have testified under oath. Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., emphasized the ongoing nature of her relationship, citing emails that demonstrate a friendly rapport between the two.
“She was desperately trying to distance herself from Epstein, but the reality is, we have the emails,” Subramanyam remarked. “It’s very clear that she had a pretty friendly relationship with him.”
Ruemmler acknowledged knowing about Epstein’s massages, although she claimed ignorance regarding the involvement of underage girls. Despite recognizing Epstein’s unethical character, she continued her association, motivated by his wealth and influence.
Revelations and Timeline
Released emails revealed numerous meetings and exchanges between Ruemmler and Epstein, post-2008 conviction for soliciting a minor. Their connection originated in 2014 when Ruemmler was a lawyer at Latham & Watkins, lasting until 2019. Epstein passed away in August 2019, under federal custody facing sex trafficking charges.
Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., and other committee members, including Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., and Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., have voiced skepticism toward Ruemmler’s testimony.
Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., expressed concern over Ruemmler’s interaction with Epstein. He noted her efforts to restore Epstein’s image post-conviction, signifying her close association with him.
Committee’s Ongoing Investigation
The committee’s ranking member, Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., questioned the credibility of Ruemmler’s statements. He found it problematic that she maintained a friendship with someone accused and convicted of sexual crimes involving minors. Despite consistent denials of wrongdoing, Ruemmler has not clarified her continued relationship with Epstein.
