Founded by abolitionists in 1865, The Nation has long served as an independent and progressive voice, documenting political and cultural issues. The state of women’s health in the United States is concerning, largely impacted by recent administrative decisions.
The situation for women’s health care has worsened under recent governmental actions. The United States sees a higher rate of women dying from preventable causes than other developed nations. This issue is particularly severe for Black women, who face much higher maternal mortality rates.
Compounding these challenges, the National Institutes for Health (NIH) has been reducing funding for research that examines disparities in health care based on race, sex, or gender. Proposals are discouraged from using terms like “women” and “diversity,” further hindering progress in addressing these disparities.
