Ukrainian fighter pilots and troops played a prominent role in France’s national Bastille Day celebrations on Tuesday. A grand parade demonstrated support for Ukraine while showcasing Europe’s collective military strength. President Emmanuel Macron, on what marked his last Bastille Day in office, hosted approximately 30 other leaders as a symbolic gesture of European unity against the backdrop of global tensions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received a warm reception from European leaders at the event. The biggest cheers of the day came from crowds along the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris as Ukrainian troops made their appearance. The show of camaraderie culminated in shared embraces between Zelenskyy and Macron at the parade’s conclusion.
Despite ongoing forest fires and an intense heat wave forcing the cancellation of certain festivities like fireworks and firefighters’ balls, the Bastille Day celebrations remained full of spirit and significance.

French President Emmanuel Macron reviewed troops during the annual Bastille Day military parade in Paris. This holiday commemorates the start of the French Revolution, celebrated on July 14, the day in 1789 when Parisians stormed the Bastille fortress, igniting a movement that saw the monarchy’s demise and King Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette meet their fates at the guillotine.
A staple of the French calendar, Bastille Day holds a place of national pride. Presidents often use the day to highlight France’s achievements, while local festivals and family gatherings fill the nation. The parade beneath the Arc de Triomphe, inspired by historic events, remains its center. A large French flag swayed below the arch as military bands and Macron, in an open vehicle, commenced the parade.
Attendees donned hats and used fans against the heat, while air force planes traced the sky with red, white, and blue trails.
Ukrainian Presence Highlights Unity
Zelenskyy was among the notable guests, standing with Macron and other heads of state in the viewing area. Ukrainian troops paraded proudly down the cobblestone streets, with Ukrainian co-pilots joining French forces in aircraft flyovers.
A young U.K. soldier, Lance Cpl. Patrick Risso, expressed pride in the opportunity to march alongside Ukrainians, believing it strengthens ties with them and NATO.
Accompanied by his wife in Paris, Zelenskyy symbolically strengthened European bonds as troops from various nations participated. The parade featured around 500 soldiers from several countries dedicated to Ukraine’s postwar security, marking a deviation from tradition wherein usually only one foreign nation partakes. British troops joined for the first time in two decades, with Ukrainian forces receiving enthusiastic applause from spectators.
The parade achieved a new record for troop participation, with 7,600 troops marching, vastly surpassing the 5,810 in the future year’s plans. Soldiers arrived early, capturing moments via selfies while military aircraft soared above.
Heat Wave Impacts Festivities
France is enduring its third heat wave, with forest fires raging in the Fontainebleau area and southern regions. Local authorities, including within Paris, restricted activities like fireworks and firefighters’ traditional gatherings due to escalating temperatures. Nonetheless, the Eiffel Tower still hosted its planned fireworks and drone show, preserving some of the celebratory spirit despite weather disruptions.
