World Shares Mixed Amid Dow Record and AI Stock Moves

1 month ago 0

World shares experienced mixed movements on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit another record. Some significant AI-related stocks rose while others saw losses.

US and European Markets

The future for the S&P 500 increased by 0.3%. However, the Dow’s future slightly decreased by 0.2%. Note that U.S. markets remained closed on Friday due to the Independence Day holiday.

In Europe, Germany’s DAX rose by 0.4% to reach 25,667.73. France’s CAC 40 dropped by 0.1% to 8,471.19. Meanwhile, the UK’s FTSE 100 fell by 0.4% to 10,613.55.

Asian Markets

South Korea’s Kospi climbed by 5.8% to 8,088.34 after a near 8% fall on Thursday. Samsung Electronics, a leading computer chip maker, saw an increase of 8.2%. Rival SK Hynix surged 10.9%.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 gained 1.5% to 69,744.07. Tokyo Electron and Kioxia saw increases of 0.4% and 9.2%, respectively.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 1.3% to 23,350.03, while the Shanghai Composite index increased by 0.4% to 4,043.64. Taiwan’s Taiex slightly increased by 0.1%, and India’s Sensex rose by 0.4%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 went up by 1.4% to 8,844.40.

“Asian stocks found some footing after two bruising tech-led sessions,” remarked Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management.

US Market Performance

On Thursday, most U.S. stocks rose. The Dow increased by 1.1% to 52,900.07. The S&P 500 slightly rose by less than 0.1%, closing at 7,483.24. However, the Nasdaq composite dropped by 0.8% to 25,382.67.

Recent reports showed U.S. employers added 57,000 jobs. This figure fell short of the 100,000 jobs expected by economists. Despite this, it suggested potential easing of inflation pressures due to stabilizing oil prices.

If inflation slows, the Federal Reserve might not raise interest rates as frequently as anticipated, benefiting investors through lower borrowing costs and an uptick in investment prices.

Sector Highlights

Crypto industry stocks rose following a 2% increase in bitcoin’s price. Robinhood Markets went up by 3.8%, and Coinbase Global increased by 3.9%.

Computer chip companies faced declines. Concerns remain that AI enthusiasm has overly inflated stock prices without matching profit growth. Micron Technology fell by 5.5%, and Nvidia and Lam Research decreased by 1.4% and 10.2%, respectively.

Other Market Developments

Brent crude, the international oil standard, dropped less than 0.1% to $71.76 per barrel. U.S. benchmark crude decreased by 0.2% to $68.48 per barrel.

The dollar increased slightly to 161.14 Japanese yen from 161.11 yen. The euro rose to $1.1451 from $1.1431.
