Changes in Pub Licensing for Football Fans

1 month ago 0

“Football might be coming home but we’re making sure fans don’t have to,” said Starmer. Pubs will remain open until the final whistle, which is beneficial for both supporters and the venues that connect communities.

The British Beer and Pub Association welcomed the decision enthusiastically, while the Night Time Industries Association noted it will significantly help hospitality businesses. Headlines highlighted plans for “England’s big all-nighter,” calling it “Mextra time” and a “Mexican rave.”

Despite fan excitement, authorities express concern about potential issues. The National Police Chiefs’ Council cited past tournaments where there were increases in violence and domestic abuse linked to alcohol. Licensing laws generally limit alcohol service to 11 p.m.

Recently, there was an exception allowing pubs to remain open until 2 a.m. for matches involving England and Scotland. However, overnight kick-off times now introduce new challenges. A match early Sunday could extend beyond 4 a.m. with penalties. Starmer has ruled out closing schools on Monday. “We want everyone to enjoy the game but children should be at school on Monday,” he stated.

His spokesperson appreciated the police’s “flexibility and professionalism,” asserting that changes were made swiftly post-England’s victory. Employers are handling last-minute leave requests, anticipating absenteeism on Monday.

“All of us need to go into work on Monday to celebrate England’s victory against Mexico,” said government minister Baroness Smith. Starmer, who plans to resign after two years, will likely be replaced by Andy Burnham shortly. Both are keen football fans. Starmer attended the Euro 2024 final after his appointment, a duty that might pass to Burnham if England reaches this year’s World Cup final on July 19.

English fans have a past reputation for hooliganism abroad, which has waned due to stricter measures. Domestic England victories sometimes spark raucous celebrations, occasionally bringing disorder as seen in the Euro 2020 and 2024 finals.
